Once children have a solid understanding of sentence structure, it’s important to begin to teach them to group their sentences into topics. A group of sentences with the same topic is a paragraph. A paragraph includes a main idea sentence that tells what the rest of the sentneces will be about. When teaching your child how to write a paragraph, start with a main topic, then brainstorm a small list of details that pertain to that same topic. Help students pick and choose details and expand on each to create a complete sentence.
